Environment and Forests Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Sunday accused BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia of conspiring against the country going to Saudi Arabia for performing Umrah.
“The BNP chairperson is conspiring against the country by meeting Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Saudi Arabia. It is known that she sat in a number of such secret meetings,” he said at a discussion organised by the US Awami League at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Hasan Mahmud alleged that the opposition leader had also engaged in such tasks in the past. “This is scandalous for the country,” he said.
Criticising the recent statement of BNP’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, he said although the holy Ramadan is a month of restraint, Fakhrul has become reckless in his comments. “Falsehood never turns into truth how hard you may try.”
Calling upon the opposition BNP to take preparations for taking part in the next general elections, the Environment and Forests Minister said the next polls would be held under the interim government.
State Minister for Law Affairs Adv Quamrul Islam, US Awami League president Dr Siddiqur Rahman and joint general secretary Nizam Chowdhury, and vice president of Krishak League MA Karim also spoke at the discussion.
