Opposition BNP yesterday warmed the government that it will be held responsible for any confrontational situation if created due to its stubbornness.
“We still hope good sense will prevail upon the government and it’ll restore the non-party caretaker government system by amending the constitution in the upcoming parliament session,” acting secretary general of the party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said yesterday.
“The government will have to shoulder the responsibility if a confrontational situation is created due to its rigid stand,” he added.
Fakhrul was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman along with leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal marking its 33rd founding anniversary.
He alleged that the government is behaving like ostrich to ignore the country’s 90 percent people’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government.
Disproving the Prime Minister’s remark that the next election will be held as per the Constitution, the BNP spokesman said whatever the government said the country’s people think a free and fair national election is not possible unless it is held under a non-party caretaker government.
Reiterating her government’s firm stance to hold the next election as per the Constitution, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday urged people not to be confused at the negative propaganda being carried out by a vested quarter.
“It’s very much regretful that a strong propaganda is going on to confuse people, I’ll urge people not to get confused. We want to run the country as per the Constitution and continue the democratic process,” she said delivering her introductory speech at the AL’s Advisory Council meeting at her official residence Ganobhaban.
Fakhrul said people in the elections to five city corporations extended their support to hold the election under a non-party administration. “We hope the government will show respect to public opinion.”
He alleged the government by its adamant attitude has already pushed the country towards instability and uncertainty.
The BNP leader said their ongoing movement for protecting democracy will reach its desired goal with the support of people.
