Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police recovered Tk 26.67 lakh in stolen money and arrested two people from Companyganj in Sylhet on Saturday night.
The arrested people are Mehbul alias Babul and his mother Arina Begum.
Abdul Jabbar alias Lipu, an office peon of Meek Knit Garmens of Uttara Sector 11 in Uttara Paschim police station, along with his brother Mehbul alias Babul allegedly stole Tk 37.83 lakh from a steel almirah of the accounts section at about 9:30 pm on July 29 this year.
The money was kept to pay wages and festival bonus of the employees, workers and other staff of the garments factory ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
A case was filed with the Uttara Paschim police station in this connection.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police conducted a raid at a house at Dakghar village of Parua Bazaar in Companyganj upazila of Sylhet on Saturday night.
The detectives arrested Babul and his mother Arina Begum from the house.
During preliminary interrogation, the arrested people told the DB police that Lipu fled to India with some of the stolen money several days back after keeping the rest of the money with them. The whole family had planned to flee the country, they said.
After searching the house, the DB team recovered Tk 26.67 lakh which were kept hidden inside several pillows.
