Bhola: At least 40 people, including four policemen, were injured in a clash between the activists of ruling Awami League and opposition BNP in Daulatkhan upazila of the district on Monday morning.
Eight critically injured people were admitted to Daulatkhan Upazila Health Complex and Bhola Sadar Hospital while the rest received first aid.
Witnesses said a group of local Awami League leaders and activists launched an attack on BNP leaders and activists at the opposition party’s Daulatkhan office when they were preparing to start a discussion meeting marking the founding anniversary of Swechhasebok Dal around 10 am.
The ruling party activists hurled brick-chips at the BNP office and ransacked it, prompting the BNP activists to retaliate.
A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee which left at least 40 people injured from both sides.
Mamunur Rashid, a local journalist, was beat up by some unruly AL activists when he tried to capture the incident on camera.
On information, Daulatkhan police rushed in and brought the situation under control. Later, both AL and BNP leaders blamed each other for the incident.
Additional police have been deployed to the area to avert further trouble.
