Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said three firms have purchased bid documents for the construction of the main structure of the much-hyped Padma Bridge project.
“Three construction firms have participated in the tender for the construction of the main structure of the Padma Bridge project and 11 firms participated in the process to get the work of consultancy for the project,” he told a press conference at his secretariat office.
The technical committee on the project will select firms for the construction and the consultancy after scrutinising the proposals, Obaidul said, adding that Bangladesh Army has been appointed the local consultant for the construction of both approach roads of the bridge.
On June 26, the government floated an international tender involving Tk 10,000 crore for the main work of the Padma Bridge project and fixed September 7 as the deadline for submission of the bid documents.
The World Bank cancelled its $1.2 billion funding on June 29, 2012, saying it had the proof of a “corruption conspiracy” involving Bangladeshi officials, executives of a Canadian firm and some individuals.
The government allocated Tk 6,852 crore in the budget for fiscal 2013-2014 to implement the mega project with its own fund.
Once constructed, the country’s longest bridge over the mighty Padma River will connect Dhaka city with 21 southwestern districts. The construction of the bridge is expected to be completed in four years.
