At least six persons were killed and several injured in separate road accidents in Moulvibazar, Dinajpur, Habiganj, Sirajganj and Khulna districts on Saturday evening and Sunday.
In Sirajganj, a motorcyclist was killed and his co-rider critically injured when a Bogra-bound bus from Sirajganj hit their bike at Poura bus stand in Sadar upazila on Saturday evening.
The deceased was identified as Muhith Uddin, 37, son of Golam Rasul of Kandapara village of the upazila.
A case was filed in connection with the incident.
In Moulvibazar, a local leader of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed and three people were injured when a passenger bus crashed into an auto-rickshaw carrying them on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Sherpur on Sunday.
The deceased, AB Kabir Ahmed, 35, was secretary of Moulvibazar town unit Jamaat and a resident of Sayerpur area of Sadar upazila.
In Dinajpur, a bicyclist was killed after his vehicle was crushed under the wheels of a truck on Dinajpur-Dhaka highway in Kaogaon intersection area of Sadar upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Rustam Ali, 45, son of Fazar Ali of Uthrail Mollapara village of the upazila.
Protesting the killing, agitated locals blocked Dinajpur-Thakurgaon highway, halting vehicular movement on the busy road.
Meanwhile, another person named Alamgir Hossain, 38, was killed being crushed under the wheels of moving train at Nimnagar level crossing in the district town around 8 am.
In Habiganj, a driver of a dead-body carrying ambulance was killed and its five passengers were injured when the ambulance collided head-on with a stone-laden truck on Dhaka-Sylhet highway near Al Amin Hotel in Madabpur upazila on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Hanif, 17, who hailed from Kishoreganj.
Police detained the accident-hit truck and ambulance.
In Khulna, a local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was killed and two others were injured while the motorbike on which they were riding collided head-on with a passenger bus on Khulna-Mongla highway in Alaipur area of Rupsha upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Gautam Chakraborty, 25, joint convener of Khanpur union unit of the ruling party’s student wing BCL and son of Prantosh Chakraborty of the union in Bagerhat sadar upazila.
On-duty police chased the seized the bus. The bus driver and its helper, however, managed to flee.
Later, the law enforcers recovered the body and sent it to Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
A case was filed with the police station concerned in this connection.
