Bagerhat: Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (CG) rescued four fisherman and recovered four firearms after a gunfight with forest robbers in Dudhmukhi canal under Sundarban east zone in Sharankhola upazila here on Monday.
The rescued fishermen are Sekander Fakir, 36, Aziz Sheikh, 22, Abu Jafar, 30, and Jalal Uddin, 46, all hail from Sunaitola village under Mongla upazila in the district.
Contacted, staff officer of CG Mongla West Zone Lt Commander M Emdadullah said on secret information that some fishermen were held hostage by the gang members of ‘Shirsha Bahini, they launched a drive in Dudhmukhi area.
When the CG members reached near Dudhmukhi canal at about 4:00 am, the robbers opened fire at the law enforcers, forcing the Coast Guard members to fire back, triggering a gunfight that lasted for six hours, he said.
At one stage, the forest robbers fled the scene leaving the kidnapped fishermen and firearms at about 10:00 am.
The law enforcers rescued the fishermen after searching their den and recovered one gun, three one-shooter guns and 77 rounds of bullets. Later, the CG member destroyed their den by setting fire to it.
Lt Commander M Emdadullah said the fishermen were kidnapped from different areas of the Sundarbans 10-12 days ago and the robbers demand ransom of Tk one lakh for release of each person.
A case was filed with Sharankhola police station.
