Kishoreganj: President Abdul Hamid on Sunday called upon the lawyers to play an active role in establishing good governance in the country in line with the Liberation War spirit.
“It’s needed to be more active in establishing good governance and ensuring the welfare of people with a view to making the Liberation War spirit tangible, and the lawyers will have to play the leading role in this regard,” he told a reception.
Kishoreganj District Bar Association organised the reception to Abdul Hamid at judge court south plaza in the district.
Hamid was the President of Kishoreganj District Bar Association for five times from 1990 to 1996.
Urging all to work together with patriotism, Abdul Hamid said, “Patriotism is not an abstract matter. Patriotism means working properly from your respective positions. Today, we badly need this spirit. It had been possible to win the Liberation War as there was no lack of such spirit at that time.”
Hamid continued: “We’ll have to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War in true sense in our actions rather than uttering it repeatedly pointlessly. We’ve got Bangladesh through a war, sacrificing blood and enduring oppression. I urge all to be imbued with patriotism.”
Terming the lawyers as a conscious section of society, the President said the effective role of this community in society and in the state can expedite the establishment of a just society and human rights.
“It’s the expectation of all that you’ll discharge your duties bestowed upon you fairly and properly. I hope you’ll give legal assistance to the oppressed and deprived people of society at affordable fees,” the President added.
Going down the memory lane, the President said, “This (district) court was my primary workplace. I had enriched myself right from here with your help.”
President of Kishoreganj District Bar Association Advocate Shah Azizul Haque delivered the welcome speech at the reception.
Later, the President planted a ‘Krishnachura’ sapling at the judge court premises.
