Sylhet: A six- hour hartal enforced by Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) protesting an attack on their rally by BCL men was observed peacefully in the district today (Monday).
CPB and BSD leaders brought out a procession at Zindabazar in the city at about 9am which ended near court point area after marching different roads.
Earlier, they held a rally in Zindabazar area where they condemned the Sunday’s attack by BCL men and demanded an exemplary punishment to the attackers.
All shops and business establishments in the city remained closed during the strike.
However, movement of rickshaws and other small modes of vehicles was normal in the city. But no long-route buses departed from two terminals of the city-- South Surma and North Surma.
CPB district unit president Anwar Hossain Sumon on Sunday announced the shutdown.
When a joint rally of CPB and BSD was in progress at the Court Point in the city on Sunday afternoon some local BCL activists, who were passing by the rally with a procession, attacked it around 5pm, leaving 30 people, including CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim and officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Akter Ahmed, injured.
