Chapainawabganj: Two people were killed and 20 others injured in a fierce clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy in Narayanpur union in Sadar upazila on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Nurul Islam, 45, son of Antaj Ali of Sardarpara, and Akhteruzzaman, 50, son of Matiur Rahman of Baghpara under Narayanpur union.
Police and locals said two rival groups -- one led by Narayanpur UP chairman Advocate Alamgir Hossain and the other by Shariatullah Lahu who lost to Alamgir in the last UP polls -- got locked in the clash at noon over establishing their control in the area.
During the clash, both groups equipped with sticks and country-made weapons attacked each other, leaving at least 20 people, including Nurul and Akhteruzzaman, from both sides injured.
Several bombs were blasted and 10-12 houses vandalised and ransacked during the melee.
The body of Nurul was recovered from a bordering area where he was allegedly taken and killed by his rivals following the clash.
Critically injured Akhteruzzaman was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where he died at Saturday night while undergoing treatment.
Both Nurul and Akhter belonged to Lahu group, sources said.
Bazlur Rashid, Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge, confirmed the incident and said a case was filed in this connection.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble.
