Five people were killed in separate road accidents in Bagerhat, Comilla and Thakurgaon districts on Saturday night and Sunday.
In Bagerhat, the driver of a van was killed and its lone passenger injured as a human-hauler ‘Nosiman’ hit the vehicle on Khulna-Mongla Highway in Bharashapur area of Rampal upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Quader, 60, of the area. The injured, Sobhan Sheikh, was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Abani Das, sub-inspector (SI) of Katakhali Highway Police Station, said the human-hauler crashed into the Khulna-bound van, leaving Quader dead on the spot and Sobhan injured.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police seized Nosiman but its driver managed to flee the scene, added the SI.
In Comilla, an unidentified young man was killed when a Dhaka-bound lorry ran him over on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Kotbari Nandanpur area of Sadar upazila around 11am on Sunday, said Mynamati Police Station officer-in-charge Mashiur Rahman.
In another accident in the upazila, an unidentified person was killed and four others were injured as a Dhaka-bound bus collided with a car in Jhagarjhuri area around 8:30am.
Yet in another road accident in Chouddagram upazila of the district, a Dhaka-bound truck ran over a woman on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Harisardar area.
The deceased was identified as Firoza Begum.
In Thakurgaon, a motorcyclist was killed as a Dhaka-bound bus ran into the bike on Panchagarh-Dhaka Highway in front of BGB Sadar camp around 8:30pm on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Engineer Abdul Khaleque, a member of the district transport owners’ association and trader of Hazipara area of the district town.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Firoz Khan said the driver of the bus, however, managed to flee the spot.
A case was filed in this connection.
