Plainclothes police have arrested eight alleged members of an organized gang involved in robbing customers of their money inside different commercial banks in the capital applying special tactics.
The arrests were made in a daylong drive conducted by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in different parts of the city on Sunday.
The arrested gang members were identified as Harun, 45, Badal, 42, Emdadul alias Chanchal, 48, Raju alias Mostafa, 45, Liton, 30, Md Harun, 40, Hannan, 50, and Yunus alias Sagar, 30.
Acting on a tip-off, a DB team, led by its assistant commissioner Abul Kashem Md Bakibillah, conducted the drive from Sunday morning till night.
During the drive, the detectives also recovered Tk 3 lakh from their possession.
One Hamidur Rahman went to Sonali Bank Lalmatia branch at Mirpur Road on August 26 with two bags containing a total of Tk 20 lakh to make two pay orders.
When he was filling up pay order forms inside the bank, the organised gang members took away one of his bags containing Tk 9 lakh applying a special method.
A case was filed with Mohammadpur Police Station in this regard.
When informed of the incident, the detectives identified the gang members scrutinizing CCTV footage of the bank, said a DB officer.
During preliminary interrogation, the criminals revealed that they had long been involved in committing such crime.
