Chittagong: Students and local people blocked Dhaka-Chittagong Highway and vandalised at least 60 vehicles protesting the death of a student of International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) in Sitakunda upazila headquarters on Tuesday.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Sitakunda Police Station Badiuzzaman said a Chittagong-bound bus of ‘Star Line Paribahan’ from Feni ran over Rabiullah Rubel, 22, in the area around 9:30am while he was crossing the highway to go the IIUC Kumira Campus, leaving him dead on the spot.
However, the killer bus left the scene promptly after the accident.
Rubel was a BBA 6-semester student of IIUC and son of Ayub Ali of Shekher Hat village of the upazila.
Angered by the incident, locals put barricades on the highway and set two buses of ‘Star Line Paribahan’ and a BRTC bus afire.
When the news of Rubel’s death spread to the campus, thousands of students took to the street, blocked the highway again and vandalised about 60 vehicles, disrupting vehicular movement on the busy highway, the OC added.
At least 70 passengers of different vehicles were injured during the vandalism.
A 50-km long tailback was created on the highway from City Gate to Baro Darogar Hat in Mirsarai upazila due to the blockade, causing immense sufferings to the commuters.
Sitakunda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shahin Imran and the OC visited the spot, and they were negotiating with the agitating students to remove the blockade.
