Chittagong: The shuttle train services to and from Chittagong University (CU) remained suspended for three hours on Wednesday following the abduction of a train driver by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) men.
Campus sources said the JCD men abducted the shuttle train driver, Badu Mia, at about 8am from the CU Station area during their demonstrations protesting an attack on some JCD men allegedly by the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Tuesday.
The shuttle services on the route came to a total halt following the abduction of the driver, causing immense sufferings to the students.
However, the JCD men set the driver free around 11am, said the campus sources.
Meanwhile, Rafiqul Islam, in-charge of CU police camp, claimed that they rescued Badu Mia. He, however, did not clarify as to from where he was rescued.
Rafiqul also said a drive was launched to arrest the offenders.
Saifuddin Salam Mithu, general secretary of CU unit JCD, said they went on a strike on the campus protesting the BCL attack on a JCD procession that left four of its activists injured on Tuesday.
He also said they were forced to go on the strike as the authorities did not take any action in this regard.
Contacted, CU Proctor Anwarul Islam said the driver was rescued after three hours of abduction. Legal action will be taken against those involved in the incident, he said.
