Gazipur: The readymade garment (RMG) belt in Gazipur vibrated to the agitation of workers for the 5th consecutive day on Wednesday for minimum wage of Tk 8,000.
Agitation of the sweater factory workers for increase in their production wage also hit the streets likewise.
Witnesses said garment workers staged demonstrations in Konabari, Kashimpur and Sardaganj areas of the city and different areas of Kaliakoir upazila prompting the authorities to suspend production at some 25 factories.
Workers of several garment units of Konabari put up barricade on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway during a demonstration for the hike in monthly wage in the morning.
A large number of policemen rushed in and drove the demonstrators away by charging them with baton and lobbing teargas shells.
Later, the authorities declared twelve garment factories of the area closed to avoid trouble.
On the other hand, workers of five garment factories in Kashimpur-Sardaganj area staged demonstration absenting themselves from work.
Later, these garment units were also declared closed.
The authorities of seven garment factories at Chandra intersection and Shafipur in Kaliakoir were forced to declare their units closed as the workers staged demonstration to press for their demands.
