Bhola: A pedestrian, injured by brickbats thrown by students of Borhanuddin Polytechnic Institute in Borhanuddin upazila on Monday morning, died at a Barisal hospital on Monday night.
Akmal Hossain, 25, son of Din Islam of Kachia area of the upazila, succumbed to his injuries at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital around 8:30 pm.
Locals said the students of the polytechnic institute boycotted their final examination on Monday morning to press home their two-point demand, including identifying them as engineers instead of supervisors in their service.
They vandalised the room of the principal and passenger buses on Bhola-Charfasson road.
At one stage, they locked in a clash with police when a chase and counter chase took place between the students and law enforcers.
Passerby Akmal was hit by a brick chips thrown by the students during the melee, leaving him injured.
With serious injuries to the head, he was taken to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where he died at 8:30 pm.
Victim’s father Din Islam filed a murder case against nine identified and 200 unidentified men.
Meanwhile, BRTC bus driver Sultan filed another case accusing 27 named and 200 unnamed students of vandalising vehicles.
Police arrested six polytechnic students in their overnight drives on Monday.
The arrestees were identified as Dipu Majumder, Subol Majumder, Sohanur Rahman, Abdur Razzaque, Rashed and Shah Farhad.
Mainul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Borhanduddin Police Station, said the arrested were produced before a court on Tuesday which sent them to jail.
