Unidentified criminals looted Tk 15 lakh from Kamlapur Railway Station in the city early Saturday after killing a Bangladesh Railway staff.
The deceased was identified as M Israfil, 55, a ticket-booking assistant of the station. He was a contractual employee of Bangladesh Railway.
The miscreants escaped with the money that came from ticket sale, said senior information officer of Bangladesh Railway Shariful Alam.
Sub-inspector (SI) Zahid of Kamlapur Railway Police Station said Israfil was found dead with his hands and legs tied with his chair in a makeshift ticket counter of the station around 5:15 am.
Israfil is believed to have been strangulated to death.
Sources at the railway station said employees of the station might have been involved in the killing since there was no scope for any outsider to get into the ticket counter.
A three-member committee, headed by Railways Ministry's joint secretary Shashi Kumar Singh, has been formed to probe the incident.
Besides, Bangladesh Railway has formed another 3-memebr inquiry committee to investigate the matter. The committees were asked to submit their reports within three days.
Meanwhile, 10 people, including six members of Railway security force, were suspended following the incident.
