Jahangirnagar University: The agitating teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Saturday staged demonstrations with black flags on the campus to press for the immediate resignation of university Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Anwar Hossain.
The teachers under the banner of ‘Sadharan Sikkhak Forum’ also hold a rally in front of registrar building at noon.
Later, they burnt the effigy of VC Prof Dr Anwar.
On the other hand, the teachers kept confined registrar Abu Bakkar Siddique and deputy registrar (academic) Abul Hasan for the sixth consecutive day on Saturday apparently to prevent the JU registrar from signing the appointment letters of three new deans approved by the VC.
Prof Hanif Ali, convener of forum, said, “We (teachers) will continue our sit-in and siege programme until the VC announces his resignation and cancels the illegal appointment of the three deans.”
Contacted, the JU VC, however, termed the teachers’ demand illogical.
Meanwhile, regular classes and examinations remained suspended for a week due to the ongoing stalemate prevailing at the university.
Mentionable, the teachers under the banner of ‘Sadharon Shikklhak Forum’ have long been on an intermittent movement to realise their 12-point demand, including the resignation of the VC.
The resignation demand came as the VC did not take proper punitive measures against JU unit BCL secretary Razib Ahmed Rasel for assaulting Nurul Haque, a lecturer of Economics Department, and also a syndicate member.
The teachers also brought allegations of various irregularities and corruption against the VC.
