Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police foiled an attempted robbery and arrested eight alleged robbers from inside a Kolkata-bound Green Line Paribahan bus at the city’s Gabtoli bus stand early Saturday.
The arrested robbers are Jakir Hossain, 40, Makhan, 35, Kamrul Hasan, 32, Humayun, 25, Shahadat Sheikh, 32, Md Khokon, 30, Abu Saleh, 32, and Lavlu Mullah, 25.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of DB police led by its Assistant Commissioner Jowel Rana conducted a raid inside the aforementioned bus at Gubtoli bus terminal around 12:30 am and arrested the eight dacoits.
The detectives also recovered eight knives, kept hidden inside their shoes, from the arrested men’s possession.
During preliminary interrogation, the arrested gangsters reportedly revealed that they had a plan to start robbing passengers once the bus started crossing Faridpur district.
Of the eight, Jakir, a skilled driver, took a seat just behind the bus driver. The plan was for him to take control of the bus after overpowering anyone opposing them, and then later to get off with the looted goods at some convenient location, said a DB officer quoted the arrested robbers.
They were members of an ‘inter-district’ gang of robbers, said the DB officer. A case was filed with Dar-us-Salam police station.
