Seven people were killed and 34 others injured in separate road accidents in Sylhet, Bogra, Barguna, Jhenidah and Satkhira districts on Saturday.
In Sylhet, three unidentified people, including a woman, were killed in a head-on collision between two buses on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Teromile area of Balaganj upazila in the afternoon.
Police said a Sylhet-bound bus collided head-on with another bus of ‘Mitali Paribahan’ bound for Dhaka in the area around 1pm, leaving three passengers dead on the spot and 30 others injured.
The injured were whisked off to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Being informed, police rushed in and seized the two buses from the spot.
In Bogra, a security guard was killed when a truck ran him over on Bogra-Natore road in Beragari area of Nandigram upazila in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Obaidur Rahman, 35, a security guard of Quality Poultry Feed and son of Alauddin of Ratnath village in Shailakupa upazila of Jhenidah.
Police said the truck crashed into Obaidur as its driver lost control over the steering after a Rajshahi-bound bus from Bogra hit it from behind around 11:45am, leaving him dead on the spot.
Police seized the truck and arrested its driver.
In Barguna, a rickshaw-puller, Mazid Mollah, 65, was killed and its two passengers were injured as a bus rammed the rickshaw in Parirkhal area of the town in the morning.
Witnesses said the Nishanbaria-bound bus from Barguna hit the rickshaw around 11am, leaving Mazid dead on the spot.
Outraged by the accident, locals vandalised the bus and set fire to it. Later, police took the situation under control.
Meanwhile, local Bus-Minibus Owners’ Group went on an indefinite strike on Barguna-Betagi and Barguna-Nishanbari roads protesting the vandalism and torching of the bus.
In Jhenidah, a schoolgirl was killed and two others were injured when a bus ran into a motorcycle on Jhenidah-Magura road at Pabhati City intersection in the town in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Poly Rani Ghose, 14, a Class-X student of Fajer Ali High School and daughter of Sukumar Ghose of Pabhati village.
Kazi Jalal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said the bus crashed into the motorbike carrying Poly and two others around 9:30am while they were going to school, leaving Poly dead on the spot.
The injured were rushed to a local clinic for treatment.
The mob smashed the bus and set it on fire and blocked the road protesting the accident.
Later, a fire service team doused the fire.
In Satkhira, a schoolboy was killed as a motorcycle ran him over at Kakdanga village in Kolaroa upazila in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam, 6, a Class-I student and son of Saiful Islam of the village.
Police said Ariful was hit by the speedy motorcycle in the area around 9am while going to the school, leaving him killed on the spot.
