In order to promote research, knowledge and volunteerism in the disaster management, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS) of Dhaka University (DU) and Voluntary Service Overseas Bangladesh (VSOB).
DU Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Dr Shahid Akhtar Hossain and Country Director of VSOB Shahana Hayat signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations at a simple ceremony at the office of DU Vice-chancellor recently.
DU VC Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique addressed the function as the chief guest. Director of the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies Prof Dr Mahbuba Nasreen, Head of Funding of Asia Pacific of the VSOB Iftikhar Ahmad and Funding Advisor of the organization Chris Wardle and Acting Registrar of DU Syed Rezaur Rahman were present on the occasion.
The objectives of the MoU are to promote volunteerism among students of the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies, build capacity of the community youth to respond to the impact of the climate change through appropriate adaptation strategy, create an opportunity of IDMVS students to conduct research, thesis and internship in VSOB working areas, create opportunity to make bridge between academic knowledge and community practice, organize national and international seminars, symposia and workshops for disseminating empirical knowledge of disaster, resilience, risk, coping mechanism, adaptation and vulnerabilities of disaster affected people.
Besides, IDMVS students will work as volunteers under ‘Clean and Green Dhaka University Campus Project’ with the technical and financial support of Voluntary Service Overseas.
DU VC Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique highly expressed the hope that the students of the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies would be benefited in the fields of knowledge on climate change, environment, global warming, green house effect, volunteerism, ethical and moral education.
