Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday again categorically said that the next general election will be held as per the Constitution and requested the people not to be confused by the opposition’s propaganda.
“Jamaat has now become the great companion of BNP; their main aim is to create anarchy in the country. I’ll request people not be confused by their propaganda. The election will be held as per the Constitution and people will cast their votes,” she said.
Hasina, also the Awami League President, was delivering her introductory speech at a meeting with the party’s grassroots leaders from Thakurgaon, Cox’s Bazar, Sherpur, Gaibandha, Feni, Sirajganj and Munshiganj districts at her official residence Ganobhaban. The meeting was designed to choose the party candidates for the next election.
She mentioned that under the present government, over 5,000 elections of different kinds were held and no one could raise any question about those elections. “No unwanted situation occurred in those elections, either,” she said.
Terming the next general election very important for the country, Hasina said it would be held in time. “BNP leader (Khaleda Zia) is making propaganda against Awami League and trying to mislead the countrymen about the election.”
She mentioned that after winning the five city corporation elections held recently, Khaleda Zia taking the newly elected Mayors said the elections under Awami League government were not held in neutral, fair and impartial manner.
The Prime Minister said it is the BNP leader’s habit to make falsehood against Awami League as she did in 1996. “She never wants to see the party of people (Awami League) in power.”
Calling upon the people to remain alert about the ‘baseless’ opposition propaganda, she said: “BNP-Jamaat and Hefazat activists burnt hundreds of copies of holy Quran on May 5 last that never happened in the history of Islam in the past.”
Hasina said: “On one hand these evil forces defamed the holy Quran and on the other they misguide the general people by doing politics in the name of Islam and telling lies about Awami League.”
She said: “The military dictators destroyed the spirit of the war of liberation after usurping power in 1975. But, her government re-established democracy in the country by amending the constitution as no country could achieve desired development and prosperity without democracy.”
The Prime Minister alleged that the BNP leader does not want Awami League to remain in power as she wants to save the war criminals and the collaborators of ‘71.
She said the judgment of the trial of the war criminals would have to be implemented on the soil of the country to free the nation from stigma.
Accusing BNP-Jamaat alliance of massive corruption, money laundering and smuggling, the Awami League President said the opposition leader misappropriated the fund of the Zia Orphanage Trust while her two sons were involved in massive corruption and money laundering through Hawa Bhaban.
Besides, she also alleged, they looted Tk 980 crore from a number of public and private banks including Sonali and Janata in the name of Dandy Dying and Khamba Ltd.
Referring to the BNP leader’s remark promising to run the country in a new way in future, Hasina said: “Khaleda wants to set up a new ‘bhaban’ like Hawa Bhaban and plans to re-establish terrorism, corruption and money laundering as her government did during 2001-2006.”
She spoke of various developments programmes undertaken and implemented by the present government in various sectors including power and energy, education, health, agriculture and other infrastructures during the last couple of years.
“The country witnessed massive socio-economic development during the period while power generation capacity rose to over 9000 MW. Moreover, the country achieved self sufficiency in food production while poverty has been reduced ensuring peace in the life of people.”
The Awami League President asked the leaders and workers of her party to go to the doors of the people and project the achievements which the Awami League-led government made in the last couple of years.
Prime Minister’s adviser H T Imam, Awami League leaders Mohammad Nasim, Satish Chandra Roy, Engr Mosharraf Hossain and Kazi Zafrullah and Mahbubul Alam Hanif were present.
