Private mobile phone operator Robi introduced its 3.5G services in Sylhet on Monday.
Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet NM Zeaul Alam inaugurated the much-awaited 3.5G services at a special ceremony at a hotel in Sylhet city at night.
The commissioner inaugurated the network with the first 3.5G video call from Sylhet to Dhaka when he talked to Robi Chief Technology Officer AKM Morshed.
Prof Dr Mohammad Zafar Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology was also present at that time.
Later, a set of 3.5G services was showcased before the guests to give them an idea about the benefits from the highly advanced technology.
Speaking on the occasion, acting CEO and Chief Human Resource Officer of Robi Matiul Islam Nowsh said he was excited to be part of such a historic occasion.
“3.5G is going to change how we do a lot of things in this country,” he said, explaining that a 3.5G network can “accelerate socio-economic benefits by bringing education, e-health, e-commerce and other social services to one’s finger tips.”
The acting CEO stressed that Robi would expand its network in quick phases to test 3.5G network efficacy.
“Our priority is a quality customer experience rather than just a speedy execution,” he added.
The 3.5G network will be commercially available to Robi subscribers in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet through October.
Meanwhile, customers in Sylhet can visit the Robi walk-in centre (WIC) at Zindabazar to experience firsthand the 3.5G network or watch 3.5G on their own 3G enabled devices in selected 3.5G coverage areas in Sylhet city.
Network coverage will cover Sylhet, Dhaka and Chittagong for all Robi subscribers in those areas.
Earlier on September 28 last, Post and Telecommunication Minister Shahara Khatun officially launched the 3.5G network simultaneously in Dhaka and Chittagong.
