Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday alleged that opposition leader Khaleda Zia had wanted to be in power and save the war criminals through carrying out bomb and grenade attacks in the country along with Jamaat and Hefajat.
“She wanted to create an era of war criminals and anti-liberation forces in the country by capturing power and annihilating the pro-liberation forces,” she said in an apparent reference to May 5-6 mayhem by Hafajat-e-Islam.
Sheikh Hasina, also the President of the ruling Awami League, made the remarks in her introductory speech at a views-exchange meeting with party’s grassroots leaders from Faridpur, Chapainawabganj, Sherpur, Magura, Sunamganj, Kusthia, Chandpur and Barguna at her official residence Ganobhaban.
About the recent bomb blast in Hefajat leader’s Lalkhan Bazar madrasah in Chittagong, she said what the opposition leader will say now.
She mentioned that Hefazat and Jamaat are the companions of BNP. “What will she say now? Bomb and grenade making materials found in the Hefajat leader’s Madrassah. Why were those being stockpiled,” Hasina questioned.
“The BNP leader tried to destabilize the country by charging bombs and push the country to an anarchic situation to stop the trial of war criminals,” Hasina said.
The AL chief also urged people to remain alert and united against any evil-design of the war criminals and militants.
At least two students were killed and seven injured in a bomb blast at a Hefajat leader’s madrasah in the port city on October 7.
Police found traces that huge explosives, including more than 30 handmade grenades, had been stored in the room where the explosion took place.
Jamiatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasah in Lalkhan Bazar area was established by Hefajat nayeb-e-ameer Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury, also a suspected activist of the banned militant outfit Harkatul Jihad al Islami (Huji).
Hasina said the bomb-making factory in the Hefajat leader’s madrasah got exposed after the explosion, or else, it would have remained untraced.
The Prime Minister alleged that the opposition leader tried to use these militants and their arms and ammunition to topple the AL government. “Just think if these people come to power what would be the country’s situation. What the opposition leader will now say before people as she had long been patronizing these elements.”
The AL chief said the opposition leader wanted to go to power along with the defeated forces of the Liberation War. “That’s why she wanted to save the war criminals,” she said.
Recalling the May 5-6 mayhem, Hasina said at that time the opposition leader had also tried her level best to destabilise the country with the Hefazat men.
She mentioned that the people of the country do not want to return to militancy and terrorism any more. “What a terrible conspiracy was on to push the country into the era of darkness.”
Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, presidium member Jafarullah Chowdhury, Engineer Mosharraf Hossain and AL leader Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and Mahbubul Alam Hanif were, among others, present.
