Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard rescued five abducted fishermen and recovered arms and ammunition after a gunfight with a gang of pirates at Khejurar Char in Sharankhola upazila under Sundarbans east zone in Bagerhat early Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, a special team of Coast Guard West Zone led by Lt Commander M Mohiuddin Muzumder conducted a drive in the den of notorious pirate gang ‘Sirsha Bahini’ at Khajurer char at about 4:00 am.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the pirates opened fire on them, prompting the Coast Guard members to retaliate.
As the pirates retreated, the law enforcers rescued five abducted fishermen- Md Mizan, 25, Md Hassan, 15, Anwar Hawlader, 16, Md Hanif , 19, and Mujibur Rahman, 40-from their den .They hail from Mongla uapzila of Bagerhat district.
Searching the area, they recovered two one-barrel guns, two LGs, 200 rounds of bullet. A case was filed with Mongla police station.
