Chittagong: A fear of violence looms large in the port city as Awami League and BNP have announced to hold their respective rallies at the same venue and same time.
City Awami League at a press conference at the Chashma Hill residence of unit president and former city Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury announced on Sunday that they will hold a two-day rally at Laldighi Maidan on October 24 and 25 to resist ‘opposition’s anarchy and sabotage’.
On the other hand, BNP has sought permission from the authorities concerned to hold a four-day rally at the same venue from October 24 to October 27.
City Awami League Joint general secretary Advocate Ibrahim Hossain Babul read out the written statement on behalf of the unit ruling party chief.
Mohiuddin who returned home on Saturday night after performing hajj in the Saudi Arabia said Awami League leaders and activists will be there on streets on October 24-25 to resist ‘opposition’s anarchy and sabotage’.
Addressing the opposition, he said, “Don’t roar. Come to the path of democracy.”
The Awami League leader also said if anyone tries to create instability in the country, they will resist it.
City Awami League organizing secretary Rezaul Karim and Awami League leader and general secretary of District Krira Sangstha AZM Nasir Uddin were, among others, present at the press conference.
Meanwhile, city BNP president Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury told UNB that they sent a letter to the Muslim High School authorities on October 10 seeking permission to hold a four-day rally at the Laldighi Maidan from October 24 to October 27.
His personal secretary Mohammad Selim said they also sought police permission to hold a meeting at the Zilla Parishad Chattar on October 23-26.
