Rajshahi: At least 12 people were injured when four bogies and the engine of a passenger train derailed as the blockaders removed fishplates of the rail tracks in Sholua area near Sharda rail station in Charghat upazila early Sunday.
The derailment halted train communications between Rajshahi and other parts of the country.
Sujit Kumar Biswas, divisional transport officer of western zone railways, said four bogies and the engine of Dhaka-bound ‘Dhumketu Express’ train from Rajshahi veered off the tracks as the fishplates of the tracks were removed by the blockaders in the area around 1:45 am, leaving 12 passengers injured.
The injured were taken to the local clinics
Railway Police (GRP) and guards were deployed in the area immediately after the incident, he added.
Enamul Haque, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi GRP, said they are working to remove the derailed bogies from the rail tracks for restoring the rail communications.
