Chandpur: At least five people were killed and 50 others injured in two train derailments as blockaders uprooted fishplates from rail tracks in Gaibandha and Chandpur on Wednesday.
In Gaibandha, three people were killed and nine others injured when three bogies of Natore-bound ‘Padmaragh Express’ train along with its engine veered off the tracks at Ullasonatola village in Sughatta upazila around 1:30am.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately while the injured were admitted to different hospitals of the district.
Hospital sources said the death toll from the incident might rise.
Akbar Hossain, station master of Bonarpara railway station, said the accident occurred due to removal of fishplates from the rail tracks by the blockaders.
The derailment halted train communications between Shantahar of Natore and Lalmanirhat.
A salvage train from the station was trying to clear the tracks by removing the derailed bogies to restore the rail communications.
In Chandpur, at least 41 people were injured when three bogies and the engine of ‘Meghna Express’ train veered off the rail tracks in the middle of Shahtali station and Madhu rail station in sadar upazila around 5:30am.
Due to the derailment, train communications of the district with Chittagong, Sylhet and Noakhali remained cut off.
Sirajul Islam, assistant station master of Chandpur railway station, said miscreants uprooted fishplates from 78 feet stretch of the tracks.
A relief train from Chittagong was sent to remove the bogies from the tracks in the morning.
