Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday said the Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project (PMBP) will certainly be built by the government within the next four years.
“Padma Bridge will be there within four years, and it will be built by us,” he said at the prestigious JICA Recognition Award Giving Ceremony to Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury at a city hotel.
Muhith also noted that the implementation of the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) Line 6 project with the assistance of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) is going on smoothly, and hoped that it will be completed by the next six years to set a world record in MRT construction.
Speaking on the occasion, JICA chief representative in Bangladesh Takao Toda said MRT Line 6 is going to be the biggest infrastructure project in terms of the cost, which is about US$ 2.5 billion, the country has ever had.
He also affirmed that the MRT Line 6 project has already been two months ahead of the schedule of the implementation and it is likely to be finished in six years.
Takao Toda handed over the JICA Recognition Award to Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury in the ceremony, simultaneously held in three other countries where three more personalities received the honor for their respective fields.
Jamilur Reza Choudhury was selected for the award in recognition of his support to the development projects in Bangladesh assisted by JICA, he added.
Jamilur contributed significantly to various JICA ODA (official development assistance) projects, including Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Projects and Chittagong Airport Development Project, by providing guidance and advice to both sides - policymakers in the government and the co-financers.
“His contribution towards improving the bilateral relations with us is priceless,” said Toda.
In his speech, Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury thanked JICA for being a long-time partner in the development activities in Bangladesh through technical and financial assistances.
