Satkhira: Jamaat-Shibir activists allegedly hacked a local leader of Awami League to death at Bishnupur in Kaliganj upazila on Tuesday for assisting the joint forces.
The deceased was identified as Moslem Ali, 65, president of Bishnupur union unit of Awami League and a resident of Chachai village in the upazila. He was also the president of Kaliganj upazila chapter of Manabadhikar Bastobayon Sangstha.
Assistant police super (ASP) Joydev Chowdhury said Moslem assisted the joint forces comprising police, Border Guard Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion during their drives since Tuesday morning to arrest the Jamaat-Shibir men in the area.
The activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir swooped on Moslem at Choumuhani Bazar soon after the joint forces dropped him there and left the bazaar around 3pm, he said.
Later, the attackers chopped him indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot.
The ASP also said they have launched a combing operation to arrest the killers of the ruling party leader.
