Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Wednesday said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is not under house arrest.
“Khaleda Zia is not under house arrest. It’s necessary to issue a notification to keep anyone under house arrest. She’s free as no such notification has been issued,” he said.
The minister came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after unveiling the election manifesto of his party Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) ahead of the January 5 general election at the party’s Bangabandhu Avenue office yesterday.
There is widespread speculation about Khaleda’s house arrest as the government has tightened security measures by deploying huge law enforcers around her residence and not allowed her to come out of the house on Sunday and Monday to join the 18-party’s abortive ‘March for Democracy’ program.
The law enforcers have created barricades on two sides of the road in front of the opposition leader’s residence by parking sand-loaded trucks since Saturday, fuelling the house-arrest speculation.
Her party BNP has claimed that Khaleda Zia has been confined to her Gulshan residence after withdrawing her police protocol since Saturday.
However, the government refuted it saying the security measures have been beefed up for ensuring the opposition leader’s safety.
Meanwhile, Environment Minister Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday said BNP Chairperson Khaleada Zia kept herself confined to her house. “Khaleda Zia is not under house-arrest, she has kept herself confined to her house. “It’s her personal matter that she is not coming out of her residence.” the minister said at a press briefing at the secretariat.
