Satkhira: Joint forces arrested 16 activists of opposition BNP and Jamaat-Shibir from different parts of the district form Friday night to this (Saturday) morning.
A team of the joint forces, comprising members of the Police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), conducted separate drives in different places of the district and arrested the 16 people, said ASP (Sadar circle) Kazi Maniruzzaman.
He said the arrestees were wanted in a number of cases, including vandalism and arson attacks during the ongoing hartal and blockade programmes enforced by the opposition alliance.
In another incident, police arrested a Jamaat activist, Mukhtar Ali, from Panchbaria village in Kaliganj upazila.
Acting on Muktar’s information, police later seized three kg of gunpowder and two bottles of acid from Bhomra Land port area in Sadar upazila, said officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station Enamul Hoque.
The OC said the explosives were stockpiled to commit subversive activities.
