Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested five persons in connection with the killing of senior photojournalist Aftab Ahmed from the capital and Gazipur on Sunday night.
Acting on a tip-off, a special team of Rab-3 conducted simultaneous drives and arrested Humayun Kabir, 32, the driver of the slain photojournalist, Habib Hawlader, 21, Kichchlu, 35, Sabuj, 22, and Raju, 22.
Briefing the reporters at Rab headquarters, its Director (Media and Legal wing) Wing Commander Habibur Rahman said the elite force arrested driver Humayun Kabir from Saidabad bus terminal on Sunday night.
According to his statement, the Rab members raided Agargoan BNP slum and arrested Habib and Kichchlu. They arrested Sabuj and Raju from Gazipur district at night, he said.
Two more suspected killers-Mizan and Russel-remained absdconding after the incident, he said.
During preliminary interrogation, driver Humayun reportedly revealed that they killed journalist Aftab for looting cash money from his flat.
Habib, Kichchlu and their accomplices had planed to kill Aftab on December 23 thinking that they will get huge amount of money in his flat. Later, they killed him on December 24 evening and looted Tk 65,000 from the flat, the driver said.
Aftab Ahmed, 79, former chief photojournalist of the vernacular newspaper The Dainik Ittefaq, was strangulated to death at his flat on the third floor of a four-storey building at 63 Wapda Road on December 24 evening. Later, his body was recovered by Rampura thana police the following day morning.
Aftab had been living his flat alone and his driver Humayun Kabis remained absconding since the incident.
A case was filed with Rampura police station in connection with the murder. Rab started investigation into the incident alongside other law enforcing agencies.
