Two green bodies have announced a month-long program aimed at building a citizen movement against food adulteration so the government takes effective measures against it.
Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) and Doctors for Health and Environment (DHEN) announced the campaign at a press conference at the Poba office on Sunday.
The campaign beginning on March 14 features joint rallies, discussions, food fair and distribution leaflets in the capital city.
Speaking at the press conference, Poba chairman Abu Naser Khan said food is being contaminated from production level to retailer’s level. Food thus causes death instead of sustaining life, he said.
“A silent mass killing and an epidemic of diseases is going on in the country due to unsafe food,” he said.
Naser Khan said government policymakers must take effective measures to cheek food adulteration and chemical contamination in food and make consumers aware of people about unsafe food.
DHEN chairman Dr Lenin Chowdhury, president of Herbal and Naturopathy Association of Bangladesh Dr Samir Kumar Shaha, Poba joint general secretaries Engr M Abdus Sohban and Aslam Khan were, among others, present at the press conference.
