Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Dr Mizanur Rahman on Sunday said it is not possible to eliminate militancy and communal violence from the country with its existing constitution.
“A constitution of hotchpotch can neither eliminate communal violence nor militancy. It is said that the 72 constitution will be restored in the country, but the state is run with policies of hotchpotch,” he said.
Dr Mizan was speaking at a national conference, titled ‘National Conference on Anti-Communalism and Militancy’ organised by Sector Commanders Forum, Muktijuddho 71 at Dhaka University’s Teachers Students Centre.
He said militants are trying to destroy the spirit of the Liberation War using religion as a weapon. “Freedom fighters must wake up again as it’s time to resist the fundamental forces.”
Terming Jamaat-Shibir a terrorist outfit, the NHRC chairman demanded an immediate ban on Jamaat-Shibir and capital punishment of all the war criminals.
He said Jamaat-Shibir men are conspiring both at home and abroad against Bangladesh and destroying the image of the nation abroad,” he said.
Chaired by Forum president and former Planning Minister Air Vice Marshal (retd) AK Khandaker, the conference was also addressed, by Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman, BTV managing director M Hamid, president of Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Shahriar Kabir and president of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu.
