Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested two train passengers in possession of 34 gold bars weighing four kgs at Kamalapur railway station in the city on Wednesday morning.
The arrestees were identified as Dilu, 30, and Sumon, 35.
Officer-in-charge of Kamalapur Railway Police Station Abdul Mazid said they had secret information that some passengers along with a consignment of gold were coming to Dhaka by Turna Nishita Express train from Chittagong in the morning.
When the two passengers-- Dilu and Sumon -- got down from the train at Kamalapur railway station around 9:15 am, a railway police team challenged them and recovered the 34 gold bars worth Tk 1.53 crore from inside their socks after searching their bodies.
Later, GRP arrested the duo for their involvement in the smuggling of the gold.
