The High Court on Monday ordered the police to arrest those who grabbed the land of a Hindu family in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat within 48 hours.
It asked the Superintendent of Police of the district to submit a report to the court within the next one week in compliance with its order.
A division bench comprising justice Reza-ul Haq and justice ABM Altaf Hossain passed the order following a writ petition filed by advocate Asaduzzaman Siddique on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, a human rights organization.
The court also issued a rule asking why the ‘reluctance of the defence’ in taking action against the ‘land grabbers’ at Rasulpur in Patgram upazila should not be declared illegal and directive would not be given to ensure security and protect the property of Hindus in the area.
The Home Secretary, the Inspector General of Police and Rangpur division deputy inspector general, Lalmonirhat police super and Patgram thana officer-in-charge have been asked to respond to the rule within two weeks.
The writ was filed following a report published in an English daily, headlined ‘Hindus land grabbed by AL leader’, on February 2.
