BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said the Dhaka City unit BNP will turn into a stronger one with its new convening committee and will be able to reflect people’s hopes and aspirations.

“The country is in political crisis. Amid this crisis, BNP is trying to tidy the party and reshape its organizational units and associate bodies. You saw the Dhaka city unit BNP’s new committee was announced on Friday, he said.

Fakhrul, the BNP’s acting secretary general, was addressing an extended meeting of Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Kalyan Front at a city hotel.

The much-talked-about BNP’s Dhaka city unit fresh convening committee was announced on Friday night. BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the 52-member committee at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.

Mirza Abbas has been made convener of the committee replacing his arch rival and BNP vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka, now in the USA for treatment, while Swechchhasebak Dal president Habibunnabi Khan Sohel member secretary of the body.

Giving his reaction to the committee, Fakhrul said, ‘Mirza Abbas is a tested politician while Habibunnabi Khan Sohel a devoted leader. The Dhaka city unit BNP will undoubtedly turn into a strong organisation under their leadership.”

He alleged that the current regime has destroyed democracy with its gradual attacks on it. “The ruling party had amended the constitution to cement one-party and a person’s rule obliterating democracy. Though once Awami League had fought for establishing democracy, now they’re destroying democracy.”

The BNP leader alleged that the country’s minority committees were attacked and repressed most under the rule of Awami League. “It’s the nature of Awami League to make their political gains by shouting the slogans of democracy and secularism, but they don’t practice that.” Fakhrul alleged that the government is constructing the Padma Bridge with own financing to loot public money.

“The World Bank had scrapped its credit for the Padma Bridge Project due to corruption. Now they’re going to build the bridge with own fund in a bid to indulge in corruption. The name and address-less farms have been awarded the task for constructing the bridge,” he added.
