Shibir man killed in poll violence

Bagerhat: An Islami Chhatra Shibir activist was killed and an Awami League (AL) activist injured in a clash between supporters of a Jamaat backed candidate and two ruling party-supported candidates in Kachua upazila during the 3rd phase of upazila election on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Manjarul Islam, 24, an activist of Bagerhat PC College unit Shibir and son of Afzal Hossain of Tengrakhali village in the upazila.
Mohammad Nizamul Haque Mollah, superintendent of police of the district, said the supporters of Jamaat backed vice-chairman candidate Advocate Mostakin Billah were wooing voters on behalf of him.
When Rafiqul Islam, 48, an activist of Karapara unio Parishad unit Awami League and son of Kashem Sheikh resisted them they beat up him mercilessly and smashed his head with bricks, leaving him critically injured.
Later the supporters of Awami League attacked the Jamaat-Shibir men and hit Manjarul Islam with brick and smashed his head, leaving him dead on the spot.
Critically injured, Rafiqul Islam was taken to Bagerhat Hospital from where he was shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital after his condition was found critical.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Bagerhat hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Mohammad Shukur Ali, deputy commissioner of Bagerhat, confirmed the incident.
