Ladsous praises BD Police in UN peacekeeping

UN Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous on Wednesday praised the members of Bangladesh Police for their capacity building, professionalism, sincerity and courage in discharging duties during peacekeeping missions in various war-ravaged countries across the globe.
The praise came when Ladsous made a courtesy call on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandker at the Police Headquarters.
The visiting United Nations Under-Secretary General for Department of Peace Keeping Operations (DPKO) said Bangladesh is the highest police contributing country in UN peacekeeping missions.
He said female members of Bangladesh Police have been performing their outstanding and admirable roles for child rescue and rehabilitation programs in war torn countries, especially Congo and Haiti.
Mentioning that the UN mandate has been changing in the present global context, Ladsous requested the IGP to give special emphasis on several issues including acquiring skill in French language to suit with the UN Mandate as well as on transnational crimes, drug trafficking and organized crimes.
He informed the IGP that there is scope to play important role for Bangladesh Police in peace building activities in various countries of conflict.
The UN Under-Secretary General assured the chief of Bangladesh Police that priority will be given in future to its members who have experience in peace building activities.
IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandker informed the UN Under-Secretary General that the members of Bangladesh Police have glorious role and contributions in establishing peace in war torn countries across the world.
He requested Ladsous for increasing participation and representatives of Bangladesh Police at all levels, including in policymaking, on pro rata basis in UN peacekeeping missions.
In response, the UN Under-Secretary General gave assurance that he would play his active role in this regard.
He also informed that two new units of FPU of Bangladesh Police would be deployed in peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Central Africa.
The IGP thanked the UN Under-Secretary General and his entourage for their continued support and cooperation to Bangladesh Police in discharging their UN peacekeeping activities.
UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Neal Walker, Chief Recruitment and Selection Gerard Beekman, Military Adviser Lt Gen Maksud Kamal and concerned senior police officers, including Additional IGP (HRM) Md Mainur Rahman Chowdhiry, DIG (Media and Planning) Md Lutfar Rahman Mandal, AIG (UN Affairs) Md Assaduzzaman, and AIG (Operation) Kazi Ziauddin were present.
