Chuadanga: An eight-hour hartal, called by the local unit of Awami League (AL) demanding cancellation of the upazila election results and withdrawal of the UNO, passed off peacefully in Damurhuda upazila headquarters on Tuesday.
A group of activists of the local units of AL and its fronts brought out a procession in the upazila in the morning.
All business establishments and shops kept their shutters down during the strike.
All modes of transport remained off the streets and a handful of rickshaws were plying the streets.
Additional police members remained deployed at the strategic points of the upazila.
The hartal will remain in force until 2:00 pm.
The local unit of AL demanded that the results of the polls in the upazila be scrapped and UNO Faridur Rahman be withdrawn within 48 hours.
Mentionable, Jamaat-backed candidates won the posts of chairman and vice-chairman while BNP-supported candidate the vice-chairman post reserved for women in the polls held on Saturday.
