Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain on Wednesday said South Africa will soon recruit skilled workers and professionals, especially farmers, from Bangladesh.
“There’s a huge demand for Bangladeshi workers in South Africa. The South African government is keen to recruit workers from Bangladesh. So we’ll send our workers to South Africa soon capitalizing on the demand,” he said.
The minister was talking to reporters after a meeting with South African High Commissioner to Bangladesh Geoff Doidge, based in Colombo, at his office.
Mosharraf said an agreement will be signed between the two countries on the manpower export.
He also said the government is working to appoint a labour attaché in South Africa for the welfare of Bangladeshi expatriates.
Replying to a query, the minister said the South African envoy told him that the visa processing for the Bangladeshis will be completed through e-mail if needed as there is mission of the country in Bangladesh.
Geoff Doidge, however, hinted that they will open their high commission in Dhaka in future.
Mosharraf said the South African envoy expressed the willingness of their government to import some Bangladeshi products, especially garment accessories and agricultural tools.
He also said they want to export their products, especially coal for boosting the energy sector of Bangladesh.
During the meeting, the minister requested the South African high commissioner to regularize some 1.5 lakh Bangladeshi who sought asylum in South Africa.
