Tuba workers collect salaries

Tuba Group authorities on Sunday disbursed workers’ salaries for the month of July and overtime bills from the BGMEA Bhaban in presence of BGMEA leaders.

Some 682 workers received salaries and overtime bills till 4:30pm today while the rest are still in the queue for receiving the same, an official at the BGMEA told.

The official hoped that the disbursement process would complete within a couple of hours.

The salary disbursement started at 2pm in presence of BGMEA President M Atiqul Islam, second vice president SM Mannan (Kochi) and vice president M Shahidullah Azim.

Vice President of Bangladesh of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporter Association (BGMEA) M Shahidullah Aziam told that the workers started collected their salaries and duties at 2pm.

The Tuba garment management provides the salaries and duties all the workers. “If any worker remains unpaid today, they’ll be able to collect it tomorrow,” the BGMEA vice president said.

On Thursday, Shipping Minister M Shajahan Khan and State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu conveyed a strong message to Tuba Group owner Delwar Hossain to pay the salaries of the workers of Tuba Group factories for July by Sunday.

Tuba Group, which owned the Tazreen Fashions Ltd, have five other factories -- Tuba Textile Mills Limited, Tuba Fashion Limited, Taif Designs Limited, Mita Designs Limited, Bughshan Garments (pvt) Limited where over 1458 workers are employed.

They went on hunger strike on July 28 demanding three months’ wages and Eid bonus. Earlier, the BGMEA authorities paid the salaries for the months of May and June.

Tuba Group’s owner, Delwar Hossain was released from jail after securing bail in a case filed in connection with the deadly fire incident at Tazreen Fashions factory in Ashulia in November 2012, which killed 112 workers.
