Communications Minister Obaidul Quader has said traffic jams in the city are created not only by reckless drivers, but also by jaywalkers.

“It seems that pedestrians don’t follow traffic rules and use Zebra crossings. This causes accidents and traffic jams,” he said on Tuesday at a workshop to discuss development of transport in the country.

He said many people don’t follow rules in using stickers on their vehicles to take undue advantage from traffic police.

“I get annoyed to find some fake journalists and government officials using stickers on their vehicles to take the wrong sides of the roads. We’ve to be vocal against them,” he said.

He directed the traffic police to examine the stickers pasted on the vehicles.

The two-day workshop has been organized jointly by the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

RHD Chief Engineer Mofizul Islam, Road Division Secretary MAN Siddique, University of Asia Pacific Vice Chancellor Prof Jamilur Reza Chowdhury and UNESCAP Economic Affair Officer Madan B Regmi, among others, attended the session.
