Bagerhat: A court here on Wednesday sentenced a man to death for killing a hotel boy in Mongla upazila in 2007.
The convict was identified as M Solaiman, 35, son of late Nabiullah of Mohammadpur village in Companyganj upazila, Noakhali. He was tried in absentia.
Judge SM Solaiman of District and Sessions’ Judges Court in Bagerhat passed the order.
According to the prosecution, convict Solaiman, together with 7-8 criminals, rented a room at the residential hotel, Singapore, in Mongla municipal area on August 5, 2007.
They spent the night at the hotel after visiting different areas, including the Sundarbans.
On the night of August 7, Solaiman and his accomplices strangulated hotel boy Alamin in his room at the hotel after tying up his legs and hands.
The criminals fled the scene with Tk 40,000 from the Almirah of the hotel cutting its grill.
On information, police recovered Alamin’s body on August 8.
Later, hotel manager Moslem Uddin filed a case against five people in connection with the murder.
In February, 2008, a charge-sheet against Solaiman was submitted to the court.
After examining evidence and witnesses, the court delivered the judgment in the murder case seven years into the gruesome incident handing down capital punishment to Solaiman.
