Detective Branch (DB) of police in separate drives arrested four people, including three policemen, and recovered 149 gold bars from their possessions from the capital, Naryanganj, Gazipur and Bogra areas at Monday night.
The three policemen-- SI Manzurul Alam, contestable Wahid and constable Akash of Rampura Police Station -- have been suspended after their arrest. The fourth man, Rana, was a police informer.
Besides, the detectives detained Rana’s wife and a driver for interrogation.
DB officials said a patrol team of Rampura thana police challenged a microbus in Banasree area on March 13. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, two of its passengers, Samir and Muhin, fled the scene.
Three days later, a case was filed with the police station showing recovery of 70 gold bars making absconding Samir and Muhin accused of it.
When they were interrogated after their arrest, Samir and Muhin disclosed that there were more gold bars in the microbus.
DB police launched an investigation into the case at the order of DMP commissioner Benazir Ahmed.
After investigation, the DB police arrested SI Manzurul Alam, contestable Wahid and constable Akash from Rampura police station and police informer Rana on Monday.
After further interrogation, three separate DB teams conducted simultaneous drives on Monday night and recovered the 149 gold bars.
Briefing reporters at the DMP media centre, joint commissioner (DB) Monirul Islam said 63 gold bars were recovered from constable Wahid’s village in Bogra, 14 gold bars from constable Akash’s village home in Gazipur, 14 gold bars from police source Rana’s relative’s house in Gazipur and 58 gold bars from SI Manzurul’s village home in Naryanganj.
The detectives have also been trying to recover more gold bars kept inside the microbus, Monir added.
Earlier, officer-in-charge of Rampura police station Kripa Krishno Bala and Inspector (Investigation) Nasim Ahmed of the police station were closed from the police station on March 18 after the concealment of gold bar recovery came to light.
