Meherpur: A Bangladeshi young man drowned in the Mathabhanga River in Gangni upazila on Friday noon after having been chased by Indian border guards.

The victim was identified as Shamim Hosain, 27, son of Shahidul Islam of Bahermadi Char village in Doulatpur upazila of Kushtia district.

Victim’s relative Sadek Ali said a group of Bangladeshi youths, including Shamim, went to India a few days back.

While returning home on Friday noon, the young men came across troops from Shikarpur BSF camp in Nadia district and they jumped into the Mathabhanga River after having been chased by the Indian border guards.

Sadek said all but Shamim managed to swim ashore.

Local people found the floating body of Shamim in the river near Kazipur village around 8pm on Saturday and informed police.

Officer-in-charge of Gangni Police Station Riazul Islam said they recovered the body from the river and later handed it over to the victim’s family members.
