Bagerhat: The ringleader of a forest robber gang was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and members of Rapid Action Battalion at Harbaria in Sundarbans of Mongla upazila early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Nasir alias Russel, leader of the forest robber gang Nasir Bahini of the area and hailing from Rampal upazila.
Acting on secret information that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery, a team of RAB-8 conducted a drive in the Pashur River in Sundarbans early Monday, said commanding officer of Barisal RAB-8 Lieutenant Colonel Faridul Alam.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Nasir’s cohorts fired gunshots to RAB, forcing the elite force to retaliate, which triggered a gunfight.
Nasir was caught in the line fire and died on the spot.
Later, RAB recovered six firearms, five sharp weapons and 169 rounds of bullet from the scene.
The seized arms and ammunition were handed over to Mongla Police Station.
Nasir was wanted in several cases.
