Jahangirnagar University: Jahangirnagar University authorities have sacked its Botany Department teacher Prof Ali Akand Mamun on various charges, including confining some teachers and staff of the department to a building of the university during a meeting on March 5.
The action was taken against Ali Akand at a meeting of the university Syndicate on Saturday night following the recommendations of a probe committee formed earlier to investigate the incident.
Sources at the university said Prof Akand had confined five teachers and staff of the department for nearly two and half hours to a building following a row during a meeting on formation of an admission committee on March 5.
Later, the university authorities formed the probe committee to probe the allegations. Later, a high-powered probe committee was formed to look into the matter on March 19. He was suspended from the university during the investigation.
Earlier, Prof Akand locked up 11 teachers of the university in a room on October 27, 2013. In April, 2012 he also locked up some teachers of the university after being assaulted by some colleagues.
Contacted, Prof Akand said, “I raised protests several times against irregularities by the teachers along with students. But it’s pointless to be honest these days. I’ve got tired of these things …I’ ve nothing more to say.”
