Rajshahi: Eight law enforcers were injured in an attack by alleged drug addicts at Rajshahi Railway platform early Monday.
Habildar Qudrat Ullah of Rajshahi Railway Nirapatta Bahini said a group of young men were taking drugs at platform-5 of the station around 3am.
They engaged in a brawl with RNB man Kawsar Alam as he asked them to leave the platform.
As a sequel to the incident, a group of 30-40 people, led by local youth Ramjan Ali and Israfil of Rajshahi Motor Sramik Union, stormed into the platform around 9am, equipped with iron rods and locally made weapons.
In their search for Kawser, they vandalized the platform and beat up the RNB man after finding him.
As other RNB men came to the rescue of their fellow, the attackers also beat them, leaving three other injured.
On information, members of Government Railway Police rushed in and tried to bring the situation under control.
However, the attackers also swooped on them and beat them brutally, leaving four of them injured.
Later, the law enforcers fired four gunshots in the air to bring the situation under control, said officer-in-charge of Rajshahi GRP Police Station Sunil Kumar Ghosh.
The injured -- GRP men sub-inspectors Sahabul and Hasibul, constables Badshah and Rokanuzzaman, and RNB members Kawsar, Jahurul, Russell and Sayam - were admitted to local Railway Hospital.
